Jumping the Line
Man, I remember sitting in my room during peak 2021 waiting for Lovejoy to release their debut EP Are You Alright?. I was so excited for their music to release after hearing the teaser for One Day… Too bad the Brighton Biter turned out to be who he is. I know a better One Day now— live laugh love One Day by Slaughter Beach, Dog off their Safe and Also No Fear album. I can’t imagine being so excited for the initial release of Dawg by them. I think I’d nearly shit myself considering how much I love them now.
We’re Flying, Now Falling…
I think it’s safe to say that Cherubhead has my same excitement for their upcoming EP. After releasing their second single on the EP, Parachute, I’m really excited what they plan to push out. I was really blown away by this release that I just haaad to listen to Jail, the first song they pushed out.
I love the full vibe of this song in general. I’m a rock fan myself and these guys really know how to do it well. I love me a Massachusetts rock band… Also, who’s coming up with this cover art? Cherubhead really nailed matching the music to the design. If I had to sum up Parachute in one word, I’d have to use “skate”. If this was released any earlier when I played Skate 3 on my PS3, I’d be listening to this song on loop. Now, I’d try skating to this in real life, except the last time I skated I broke my wrist rollerskating at a friends birthday party… So for now I’ll just have to use my imagination! Dang it, now I’m here wishing I was a Cherubhead fan since day one… The rest of their discography is truly amazing and I’m super excited to hear the full EP come out.
Maybe We Won’t Be Left On Read After All
Bro… I be waiting for Left On Read to drop new music. They posted on their Instagram story that they finished recording their new EP. It’s been a little too long since they dropped some music and I’m dying to hear more!
I found these guys around the time they released Take Up Arms. They were my entry way to DIY scene, except I had no clue what any of that meant at the time… I’ll still give them the credit for it, though. Dude, I’m not even gonna lie, I didn’t even listen to them until they released Take Up Arms. I kind of just… followed them on Instagram for no reason and finally gave in once I saw the song announcement. It was SO worth it, though!
Dude, I was so excited to hear that they released an EP in 2023 called Sorry We’re Late. I was a huuuge fan of Wild Duck Margaritas, so knowing more music was coming was crazy to me. March 2nd, 2023, I clicked that play button on Spotify and bro… My world changed. I really enjoy opening tracks, but this one just… Gosh, this song is the equivalent of eating extremely saucy chicken wings then licking your fingers to savour that delicious meal you just scarfed down… No? That’s just a me thing…? Sorry, my bad dawg.
I love Left On Read if that wasn’t obvious enough. Phobia of a Time is by far one of their best songs released. The upbeat instrumental, the guitar, I dunno man. I don’t think I’ve ever been intrigued about someone singing “Eating all the babies, they taste like shit”… Now, Jeorge… what does this mean bestie…! I love this song so much. This song would go pretty crazy in person.
I expect their new EP to be this close to perfection— if not, even above and beyond perfection. Left On Read is one of my favourite DIY bands in PDX scene… They’ll always have my heart even though they’re taking a break for a bit.
Moon Over Salem
Honestly, I’m kind of wishing the moon would just explode it’s orbital patterns and become a full moon solely for this music festival. That’d be pretty cool, but NOOOO, we can’t affect how the moon looks or else we would probably all die. What an absolute shame.
Moon Over Salem is a music festival hosted by Music Organisers of the North Shore (MOON). Taking place in Salem, Massachusetts, this 36 local band music festival will light up Salem on September 14 this year. This festival is going to be one to remember- several of my favourite Mass-DIY bands are playing this fest, so, you know… hopefully my bias around them doesn’t ruin how AWESOME this fest is gonna be!
I heard some of the bands on this bill will be saying some special words for DIY Dispatch… That’s something to for sure be on the lookout for!
The Sailor Is Canadian
Oh, fuck. How did they end up in Massachusetts? This 4 piece from the Wakefield/Boston area really knows how to fuck shit up. Back in October last year, I saw them for the first time ever— this was also my first basement show, so like… lowkey… pretty awesome. Seeing them play Moon Over Salem is so groundbreaking to me.
I went into that show not knowing what to expect. I was super anxious about meeting new people and bro… Largecumjar, bro. I fucking love Largecumjar. They were SO sweet to talk to at that show and made me feel like I’ve done this rodeo before. I don’t think I’ve made a better scene friend before— they were super sweet and introduced me to so many things. If it weren’t for Largecumjar, I don’t think I would continue doing DIY stuff ON GOD. They’re like those paper book manuals you get in utilities to learn how to do things and give helpful tips and stuff… They’re like the handbook of DIY and holy fart it’s insane. Meeting Largecumjar at the Canadian Sailor show was insane and I don’t think it could get more crazy.
I had such a blast at this show, I occasionally reminisce about it still… You know it’s a great show when they pull out Mrs. Guidi. I remember Colin, the lead singer of Canadian Sailor, saying they hadn’t played that song in a bit. My excitement hearing those words… god dude. I miss them so much.
There’s something about this song in person. I don’t know if it’s the intro, Colin’s vocals, or what, but man. I think I nearly ascended hearing this song. Every time I listen to Canadian Sailor, I always go back to this song first. “But without you I can’t put these things to bed” is such an insane line to throw into a song like this. I’m usually for music being a lot better live, but I think this is a little too good…
Moon Over Salem will for sure be one of the best events for Canadian Sailor. I’m really excited to see them perform this fall— they put on an insanely good show and man do I wanna chase that high again.
Gone, But Never Forgotten?
So long, goodbye… Here’s a fun fact. You can purchase Moon Over Salem tickets for an extremely amazing price. It’s a once in a lifetime experience to show up to this event to see our active local music scene, especially this one. This is huge for everyone!
A little birdie told me that engineers are often sincere and will be added to our next big edition of our magazine… Can you keep your eyes peeled for that? I’m really excited to write about such a crazy band… You don’t even know, man. Until next time. 8)
