Yo, I sprinted to you to talk about Free Rock’s new music video for their song Pipe Dream. Let me tell you this… Dud’s Dungeon produced this. Can you believe this was their first ever music video produced? Like… ever?
Dud’s Dungeon is a venue in Massachusetts that has their own YouTube channel where they upload live sessions they film in their dungeon (words of the Instagram runner)— along with some live concert videos from the shows they’ve thrown. I, myself, am a huge fan of the Three Mandareens session they filmed about a year ago. They have many more live sessions and live concert videos to come, and I’m really excited to see them!
Free Rock, a psychedelic rock band based in Boston, Massachusetts, has been pushing the boundaries of their genre since their formation in 2019. The band’s current lineup features Jacob Keplinger on guitar, Liz Siegel on bass, Jackson Keplinger on keys, and Elliott Eastman on drums.
Originally founded in Winchester, Massachusetts, the band released six studio albums with their original lineup of Jacob Keplinger, Liz Siegel, and Justin Siegel. Their early releases— Free Rock, Buford, Gone Wild, New Threads in Dead, Milk, and Northern Terrace— laid the groundwork for their signature sound. In April of 2022, Jacob’s younger brother, Jackson, joined the group on keys, and the newly formed quartet released an additional five albums, including Free Rock National Park and Dirty Disco.
Following the departure of Justin Siegel in 2023, Free Rock quickly welcomed drummer Elliot Eastman, a longtime friend of Jacob’s. The new lineup debuted with the release of Free Rock Express in early 2024, signalling a bold new chapter for the band.
Before adopting the name Free Rock, the band performed as New Threads, a project founded by Jacob and Justin Siegel in 2016. As New Threads, the gorup released four albums, including the breakout success Felonious Wilma in 2019, which freatured the single “Alone, Leave Me” and landed on prominent Spotify playlists like New Music Friday and Punk Unleashed. After releasing their final album, Threadsboro, in 2019, the band went on a hiatus, paving the way for Jacob and Justin to relocate to Boston and form what would become Free Rock.
With a rich history of creative evolution and an ever-growing discography, Free Rock remains a vital force in the Boston music scene.
Free Rock’s music video for Pipe Dream is their newest release coming off their 12th studio album. This is no ordinary production— produced by Dud’s Dungeon, Free Rock finds themself in a field where friends join each other to play an old vintage game, Mario Bros, on a sticker bombed TV and later adventure onto the woods and take in the scenery.
The lyrics in this song seem to explore the emotional turbulence of navigating challenges, whether in relationships, personal struggles, or chasing dreams. “I like to write more conceptual or narrative-focused lyrics…” says Jacob, who wrestles with exhaustion and self-doubt while striving to stay hopeful, acknowledging their vulnerabilities and mistakes. There’s a sense of tension and deep emotional connection with another person, as well as a shift toward practicality and resilience, with the repeated belief that better days are on the horizon. It’s a blend of introspection, determination, and quiet optimism.
This music video is an absolute masterpiece. It’s so well produced for a first time music video. At the start of the video, I loved how Rocky hopped on the TV to play Mario Bros. It was a super great introduction to the music video and gave me a really nostalgic feel. The day and night changes really shows the dedication to this music video, dude. The super sunny, forest-y environment with the open fields with the vibrancy up a notch gave me a summery feeling. I hope this was the vibe that was shot for, because it’s genuinely so accurate.
The lights at night… ough, bro. That was such a nice touch to the music video. Having equipment and the band members covered in the string lights was just *chef kiss*. No clue who’s idea this was, but god damn you are a GENIUS. I’m not even sure how this could’ve been achieved since it seems like we’re out in the very open in the music video, but WOW. That was a whole other feel to the music video that perfectly matched the song. I was sooo amazed with that part.
One thing that stood out to me from the song alone was the bass line. Every song I listen to, I try to pick up on that bass because bass alone is a great structure to any song. This song in particular has such a strong bass line that the moment I heard it, I immediately dug this song. Free Rock has so much creativity, it’s crazy.
From the catchy and personal lyrics to the upbeat, funky, summery feel, this song is one of a kind and so worth listening to on repeat. I really enjoyed hopping out of my usual music genre to listen to this song for the first time ever! I’ve always heard “Oh, yeah! Free Rock is amazing!” and “Free Rock? Oh, yeah those cool guys!” from so many people, or at least anything under the lines of that, and they truly lived up to those expectations.
