There are nights in your life where you wish you could live in them forever. The air feels crisp but warm, and you are surrounded by a group of people that love you and you love them back. Last night was one of those nights for me. A cherished memory was made that will sit in my mind for years to come. First off, a big thank you to Impossible Shows for once again, throwing an absolute banger of a show!
I was fortunate to share the stage with some of the best friends and musicians a person could ask for. My band, Good June, got to kick off the night of incredible music at Union Square’s The Jungle! As much as I love the music I make, I’m going to spend this article talking about the fantastic bands that made last night so special.
So, after Good June left the stage, one of my favorite bands (not just local bands) took the stage. If you know me or attended last night, I’m talking about the one and only Impossible Dog.
IMPOSSIBLE DOG
I think I might hold the record for the most Impossible Dog shows attended by a non-member, so I feel like I have the authority to weigh in on this. The dogs were ON ONE last night. The energy was electric, and they channeled it into every single song. From crowd favorites like “Long Shot” to some unreleased tracks like “Super Convenience Plus,” Impossible Dog kept every single person locked in.
Impossible Dog has mastered the art of not only having great music, but also about how to bring it to life on stage. Providing glimpses into the songs and the personalities of the incredible people who make it. From talking about the love of convenience stores to taking an extended instrumental break so that Evan Kelley (Vox/Guitar) can walk to the bar mid-set to grab a shot. You aren’t just hearing the songs you know and love at Impossible Dog shows; they invite you into every inside joke.
If you made the terrible blunder of not making it out to see them last night, you still have a few chances to catch the Doggies this summer. Namely they will be ripping up Nice, a Fest this year - playing on Friday!
TATOOINE PUNK SCENE
At this point, I’ve known the folks in Tatooine Punk Scene for the better part of 3 years. They continue to get better and better each time I see them. When they get on stage, it feels like I’m about to be served a nice home-cooked meal, something put together with care and love. Luckily for me, that’s what I get - every. single. time.
Tatooine Punk Scene is full of music scene veterans —folks who have been through the wringer and have outgrown many of the pitfalls that come from inexperience. They bring a sense of comfort on stage, letting everyone in the room know; “Hey, we’ve done this countless times, so just enjoy the show.” Once that moment hits you, that’s when TPS unleashes their beautiful and profound songs. I have such a soft spot for their song “Appetite” - I can’t help but belt out the lyrics every time I see them, “You weigh the options as I run out of mine” rings in my head for days following every performance. Fortunately for anyone reading this you will have plenty of opportunities to catch them this summer as they hit the road with Hyber next month!
PROFESSOR CAFFEINE & THE INSECURITIES
I’ve had the pleasure of catching Professor Caffeine & The Insecurities twice this month. First, on June 3rd, at the Silhouette Lounge, where they had an incredible set that left my jaw on the floor. Part of me thought maybe it was a fluke that a band could be this talented; perhaps they were having one heck of a night. I was proven very wrong; they are just S-tier musicians.
If you’re a musician, watching Professor Caffeine makes you realize how much time you’ve wasted not practicing. Not a single member of this band is the “weak link.” They are all top level players and songwriters who act like surgeons on their respective instruments. I could go on for hours about their musical prowess, but they are more than that.
They invite you into their world with each song, the dynamics rocking you back and forth as the vocals invite you to take one step closer, beckoning you to let go and let the sound consume you. I was very happy they included their song “Astronaut” in their set. This song has been a mainstay since I caught them earlier this month. If you’re sleeping on them, maybe you need Professor Caffeine to wake you up.
THE END
Thank you for reading! Make sure you follow to stay up to date with all the DIY news going on; there is a lot of it!
Make sure to catch all the great Boston Bands, including Impossible Dog, at Nice, a Fest next month, July 25th-28th!
